The romantic month of February is nearly at an end, so here’s my last post of some of my favorite romantic films:
Sleepless In Seattle (1993)
It’s only fitting that I include this movie since it references a movie that I had previously posted about - An Affair to Remember. And this is the first of two movies on my list that stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Hanks is Sam Baldwin, a widower living in Seattle with a young son who wants his dad to find a new wife. Ryan is Annie Reed, a woman living in New York who is engaged but not entirely certain of her choice for a husband. It seems that Sam and Annie are made for each other, but will they ever meet?
Somewhere In Time (1980)
I’m a big fan of this movie and I’ve seen it countless times over the years! It’s about a playwright named Richard Collier (played by Christopher Reeve) who falls in love with the photograph of a enchanting stage actress from 1912 named Elise McKenna (played by Jane Seymour). He miraculously travels back in time in order to meet her and the two quickly fall in love. But complications may prevent them from remaining together. The chemistry is perfect between Reeve and Seymour, and this movie has a beautiful, haunting score by John Barry (one of my favorite composers!)
Titanic (1997)
Most people will either say they love this movie because of the spectacle, the whole reenactment of the sinking of the Titanic; others will say they love this movie because of the captivating love story. I love the movie for both reasons! Leonardo Dicaprio is Jack, a poor but talented artist on board the ill-fated Titanic; Kate Winslet is Rose, a woman being forced to marry a rich cad. After Jack saves Rose’s life the two soon find themselves falling in love, but there are obstacles along the way, namely an iceberg! This is a beautiful movie that deservedly won the Best Picture Oscar!
West Side Story (1961)
Here’s another Best Picture Oscar winner; it’s a musical that takes on a variation on the Romeo and Juliet story, with Natalie Wood as Maria (Juliet) and Richard Beymer as Tony (Romeo). They meet and fall in love instantly at a dance that has been arranged to help improve relations between two groups/gangs: The Jets and The Sharks. Maria and Tony defy their families and friends by seeing each other, but as with the story of Romeo and Juliet there will be tragedy.
What’s Up, Doc? (1972)
This is one of my favorite “screwball comedies” and is also quite romantic. Barbra Streisand is Judy, a seemingly jinxed woman who crosses paths with Howard, a musicologist (played by Ryan O’Neal) in San Francisco, and soon there are all sorts of complications and chaos. There’s a lot of physical comedy, pratfalls, mix-ups, but in the midst of it all Judy falls for Howard and keeps pursuing him, and despite his protests Howard soon becomes smitten with Judy. Sometimes love is just pretty darn funny!
You’ve Got Mail (1998)
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan reunited for this charming remake of the classic 1940 film The Shop Around The Corner. Ryan’s character, Kathleen, owns a little bookstore that faces sudden competition from a huge new store owned by Hanks’ character, Joe. Naturally, Kathleen detests Joe and his store, but she doesn’t know that he is the mysterious guy she has been chatting with (and falling for) online!
