Today’s post is about my favorite movies starring one of my favorite actresses, the exquisite, enchanting Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993):
Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961)
Audrey Hepburn earned an Oscar nod as Holly Golightly, a “party girl” who meets and falls in love with a struggling writer living in her apartment building (played by George Peppard). At the beginning of the movie there is a shot of Audrey standing in front of Tiffany’s, eating a breakfast pastry (hence the title of the movie) and she looks so beautiful, so classy; it sets the tone of this very romantic movie.
Charade (1963)
Audrey Hepburn stars opposite Cary Grant in this clever, exciting Alfred Hitchcock-like mystery; she portrays a woman whose estranged husband has been murdered and now she is being pursued by three shady men, all of whom believe she knows where her husband has hidden a quarter of a million dollars that they stole together. Grant is there to help Hepburn, but he may have ulterior motives. There’s incredible chemistry and witty quips between these two wonderful stars, which makes for a fun movie experience!
The Children’s Hour (1961)
In this intense drama, Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine are two close friends/teachers that run a small school for young girls. When a particularly nasty, spoiled girl decides she is not being treated fairly by Hepburn and MacLaine she starts a vicious rumor about these women that sets in motion a series of horrible events. This is a very well-crafted, well-acted movie.
Roman Holiday (1953)
This was Audrey Hepburn’s major film debut, and it is my favorite of her movies! Hepburn earned her only Academy Award for her captivating performance as a princess, visiting Rome during a goodwill tour. Overwhelmed, overwrought and on the verge of a nervous breakdown, Hepburn escapes one night and soon meets Gregory Peck. She is unaware that he is a reporter and he keeps this a secret in order to secure a major news story. When they spend a day together in the idyllic city of Rome Hepburn and Peck fall in love, but eventually their holiday must come to an end. So beautiful, touching and sad! Audrey’s best work!
