Today’s post is about some of my favorite movies starring one of my favorite actors, the suave, charming Cary Grant (1904 - 1986):
The Awful Truth (1937)
I am a big fan of “screwball comedies” (particularly from the 1930s) and this is one of my favorites. Cary Grant and Irene Dunn play a married couple; however, they don’t trust each other, and following a series of misunderstandings and suspicions they divorce. Of course, they are still in love with each other, and when each of them becomes engaged to another person they both are determined to sabotage the relationships. Very, very funny! Trivia note: Director Leo McCarey won the Best Director Oscar for this movie.
Bringing Up Baby (1938)
Another classic screwball comedy (and in my opinion the standard for all others to follow!): Grant plays a nerdy paleontologist who gets mixed up with a ditzy heiress (played by Katharine Hepburn). Things become complicated when Hepburn falls for Grant and will do whatever it takes to keep him around, even recruiting him to help her deliver a pet leopard named Baby to her aunt. Chaos ensues, along with a sweet love story!
Father Goose (1964)
This is one of my favorites of Cary Grant because in this movie he plays against type: Grant plays a boozy, sloppy man who lives on a boat out in the Pacific during WWII. He comes to the aid of French schoolteacher (played by Leslie Caron) stranded with several girl students. She does not approve of his drinking, while he finds her stuffy and insufferable. Of course, it will only be a matter of time before they fall in love!
Notorious (1946)
I am planning on doing a blog post about one of my favorite directors, Alfred Hitchcock, but I’m including this movie in today’s post because it is also one of my favorite Cary Grant movies. Grant is in top form here as a handsome, distinguished American agent paired up with the beautiful Ingrid Bergman to do some espionage work down in Brazil. Grant and Bergman have a love/hate relationship, but love will clearly win out! Awesome movie, full of danger and intrigue and a memorable kissing scene between Grant and Bergman!
